Etiquette & Tips

Before you strip down and hit the massage table, here are some basic rules of wellness etiquette to help you know what to expect and feel at ease.

Arrive on time
What time that is depends on what kind of wellness it is, whether you've been before, and what kind of experience you want to have. Fifteen (15) minutes can be enough for basic massage treatment.

Shower before your session
Either before you leave the house or at Shon-Shiwa Wellness. It’s common courtesy, and it makes the experience better for everyone.

Don't Come in if you’ve had alcohol or drugs in the past 24 hours
Narcotics are obviously not something you want coursing through your system when you’re receiving massage, and it is both unethical and dangerous to massage someone under the influence of alcohol. In fact, it’s best to avoid alcohol entirely for 24 hours before your massage.

Turn off your cell phone
You can't relax if you're answering calls, checking emails, and texting during the massage treatment-- and neither can the person next to you.
Sometimes it's okay to text or check emails while you're getting a pedicure, but please refrain from conversations.

Speak Up About What You Want
When you make a massage appointment, you will be asked if you have a massage therapist of your choice. If you don't have a preference, you are more likely at Shon-Shiwa Wellness to get the massage therapist available at that point in time.

Even if the goal of your massage is simply to relax and forget about your overflowing inbox for an hour, please be upfront with your massage therapist about any medical issues you may have.

Is Talking Allowed?
You can talk during the treatment or be still, as you choose. The massage therapist should follow your lead.

Tip handsomely
In a wellness setting, massage therapists get about 30% to 40% of the total price of the massage. This sounds like a lot for an hourly rate, but most therapists only actively massage for 20 to 30 hours a week.

Cancelling Your Appointment
Most wellness centres have a 24-hour cancellation policy. If you know you're not going to make it, let Shon-Shiwa Wellness know as soon as possible. A therapist might have come in just for you, and if you don't pay, the massage therapist doesn't get paid.

Don't get a massage if you're sick.
If you're sick, please do not come in.
